Ontario to invest $30 million in Windsor Regional Hospital

The Ontario government plans to invest $30 million in Windsor Regional Hospital to improve treatments for cancer and cardiovascular disease.

The improvements will make it easier for Windsor-Essex patients to be diagnosed and treated closer to home, the government said Thursday in a news release.

“Our government is giving Windsor Regional Hospital the funds it needs to provide the best possible care to patients in the region while we work towards building a new and modern hospital,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “This means that patients in the area will no longer have to travel far distances to receive treatment, leading to faster care and improved quality of life.”

Windsor Regional will use the money to renovate its cardiac catheterization lab, where patients receive angiograms, angioplasties and other cardiac tests and procedures.

Patients currently have to travel to London or cross the border to Detroit for urgent procedures, due to limited access. The funding will allow Windsor Regional to expand its catheterization lab, which already operates 24 hours a day, with a second catheterization table.

As well, the hospital will expand its cancer centre for a new linear accelerator, which provides cancer patients with radiation therapy treatment. The additional linear accelerator will provide more cancer patients with radiation therapy sooner than before.

According to the news release: “As part of the government’s plan to connect people with more convenient care, Ontario is investing over $1 billion in more than 50 major hospital projects, including the new Windsor Regional Hospital, over the next 10 years.”

The announcement was made ahead of a news conference that Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Minister Jones have planned for Thursday in Windsor.
